NEW:  Art Tour to Marfa, Texas

Join Houston artist Michael Macedo Meazell (http://www.macedomeazell.com) as he takes us on a very special insider’s tour of Marfa, Texas.  On this small group tour you’ll spend three days in this art-filled hamlet that’s enticing artist and art lovers from all over the globe.  You’ll tour the Chinati Foundation, a contemporary art museum based upon the ideas of its founder Donald Judd.  The intention is to preserve and present permanent large-scale installations by a limited number of artists.  The emphasis is on works in which the art and the surrounding landscape are integrated.  The Judd Foundation offers visitors insight into Donald Judd’s art and vision.  Judd’s private living and working spaces provide firsthand experience of Judd’s concept of a permanent installation in the Chihuahuan Desert.  Ballroom Marfa is a dynamic, contemporary cultural arts space where varied perspectives and issues are explored through visual arts, film, music, and performance.  The gallery is housed in a converted dancehall dating from 1927. Also enjoy the Marfa Lights and McDonald Observatory.

Day 1:  We’ll fly to El Paso on Thursday, meet our private mini bus and driver and drive southeast to Marfa.  Midway we will make a stop in Valentine at Prada Marfa, a permanently installed sculpture by artists Elmgreen and Dragset, inaugurated on October 1, 2005.  The artists called the work a “pop architectural land art project”. On the front of the structure are two large windows displaying actual Prada accessories, shoes and handbags selected and provided by Miuccia Prada herself.

Upon arrival in Marfa, we’ll visit one of the local galleries/ studios before checking into the Hotel Saint George to get ready for dinner.  After dinner head out to see the Marfa Lights.  Later cocktails at a local bar to end the day.

Day 2 is spent at the Chinati Foundation. The day long tour will break midday for lunch.  This evening after dinner we’ll head to the “Star Party” at the McDonald Observatory for some star gazing.

Day 3 gives you a morning option.  Hike the mountain ridge around Fort Davis Historical Site to the Davis Mountain State Park for a nice workout and incredible scenery  OR stay in town for a spa visit, shopping or just enjoying the charming little town.  After lunch we will visit the Judd Foundation for a special tour of the studios and home of Donald Judd. A visit to another Artist Studio will end the day.

On Day 4, have breakfast and then back to El Paso for our afternoon flight back home.
